Adding Tax Rates To Bottle

As a merchant, you might need to charge taxes on your sales, and then report and remit those taxes to your government. Although tax laws and regulations are complex and can change often, you can set up Bottle to automatically handle most common sales tax calculations.

Bottle doesn’t file or remit your sales taxes for you. You might need to register your business with your local or federal tax authority to handle your sales tax. The calculations and reports that Bottle provides should help make things easier when it’s time to file and pay your taxes.
You should always check with a local tax authority or a tax accountant to make sure that you charge your customers the correct sales tax rates, and to make sure you file and remit the taxes correctly.

Steps to Setup Taxes

  1. Open up the Dashboard
  2. Go to Products and Checkout
  3. Click Tax Modules
  4. Select the state and tax rate you would like to charge for that state.

How Customers Are Charged Taxes

Once you've entered in a tax rate for a given state, customers who live in that state, have meals shipped to that state or pickup meals in that state will be charged the corresponding sales tax.

How Taxes Are Calculated

Taxes are calculated on the subtotal amount of the cart. For example, if you have a 9% tax rate, sell a meal for $10, the customer will be charged $0.90.

Tax Rates on Fulfillment Fees

You have the option of including the cost of delivery, shipping or pickup in the taxable subtotal. To include the fulfillment fee in the taxable subtotal you will need to check "taxable" on the delivery option (dashboard >products and checkout > delivery options > edit next to the desired option > check "taxable").

Tax Reports

You can analyze your sales taxes on several reports. The Transactions Report in the Data Downloads tab provides the best snapshot of taxes due during a given time period.
